  1. How long has the system been in the workplace?
The Eco Bokashi bin has been in place for approx 3 years.
  2. How many units do you have?
    1 domestic unit.
  3. Is it used in classrooms/staffrooms or both?
The system is currently stored and used in the staffroom kitchen.
  4. How many staff and students?
There is approximately 100 staff that use the staffroom and most teachers who eat their lunch in the staffroom use the bin. On average approx. 50 staff would use the bin daily for food scraps, tea bags and coffee grinds.
  5. How do we deal with waste when the buckets are full?
The waste is transfer to a larger wheelie bin (standard bin) where soil is added to the top. Every month or so, environment group picks it up to take to the environment centre at the college and buried in the soil. The liquid is diluted and sprinkled onto the staff courtyard garden.
  6. Is there any smell?
At times the bin may smell, however this is due to the bin going untreated i.e. not adding bokashi regularly or not being compacted. This usually occurs when the bin is still being used during holidays and when I am on camp and I am not there to add Eco Bokashi.
  7. Who is responsible for the maintenance (i.e. adding of Bokashi)?
I am … Trent Collins (PE Teacher).
  8. How much Eco Bokashi do you go through per month/ year?
At Whitefriars College, we tend to go through approx 2 (I think 8 kg) buckets of Eco Bokashi.
  9. Issues encountered along the way and general comments?
Staff tend not to like opening the bucket lid … some complain of the smell when opened but I would actually put this down to laziness. Instead, what has become the norm is a bowl is left out in front of the bucket. Staff add waste to the bowl … and when walking through the staffroom I or a few other staff will empty the bowl into the bucket. This is usually done once to twice a day.
